Gerald Resch’s “Drift” Before Austrian Premiere

Kian Soltani, just 23 years old, has already himself at the highest level of the new generation of cellists, at the latest since winning first prize at the International Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki in 2013. Together with the Wiener Concert-Verein (conductor: James Judd), Soltani, born in 1992 in Bregenz, will present the Austrian premiere of Gerald Resch’s “Drift” for violoncello and chamber orchestra at the Wels Stadttheater (Municipal Theatre) on 21 November 2016.

The Austrian composer wrote this work in response to a commission from the conductor Peter Sommerer, under whose direction the concert piece was given its world premiere on 18 March 2014 in Schleswig by the TONALi winner Alexey Stadler and the Schleswig-Holstein Symphony Orchestra.

Gerald Resch’s comments on his concert piece as follows:
“During the composition of ‘Drift’, I was thinking about the movements of waves on the ocean surface arising due to wind flows. The waves follow the direction of the wind, but are frequently interrupted and distorted by the inner movements of the water masses - the slower the movements, the deeper these interruptions and distortions are. This interaction between different speeds and directions of movement are also of musical interest to me. I translate this observation in ‘Drift’ into brief melodic lines with rhythmic profiles, thus developing various characteristic motifs. These motifs influence each other mutually and are permanently varied, combined and overlapped. Imitations at different speeds play an important role in this process. Various formal stations (designated in the score as ‘Surf’, ‘Impulses’, ‘Swarm’ and ‘Canon’, for example) are continually metamorphosed into each other and return in an altered sequence - following a cadenza by the solo cello in the middle of the composition - during the course of the approximately 15-minute piece. ‘Drift’ was composed at the suggestion of the conductor Peter Sommerer and is dedicated to him.”

Further performances of “Drift” in Austria will be given at the Laxenburg castle on 25.11. (7:30 PM) and 26.11. (4:30 PM) during the course of the “Laxenburger Schlosskonzerte” (Laxenburg Castle Concerts) as well on 27.11. at the Musikverein Wien (7:30 PM). Kian Soltani and the Wiener Concert-Verein (under James Judd) will be the interpreters for these concerts too.
