German Premiere: Sofia Gubaidulina’s “On Love and Hatred” at the Semperoper Dresden

Sofia Gubaidulina has once again been named Capell-Compositrice of the Staatskapelle Dresden during the 2016/17 season. Her latest work, “On Love and Hatred”, will be performed on three consecutive days, beginning with the German premiere on 30 October 2016. The vocal soloists Camilla Nylund (soprano), Michael König (tenor), Thomas E. Bauer (baritone) and Franz-Josef Selig (bass) will present the work in the Semperoper in Dresden together with the MDR Leipzig Radio Choir and the Staatskapelle Dresden under the musical direction of Omer Meir Wellber.

“On Love and Hatred” was commissioned by the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Dresden Frauenkirche Foundation, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam. In it, Sofia Gubaidulina sets psalm and prayer texts, mostly in German and Russian but also in Italian, French and English. In its musical and textual content, the work is the spiritual reaction of the composer to the increasing unrest of today’s world.

The Norwegian premiere at the Olavsfest in Trondheim is planned for August 2017, and the work will also be performed in September 2018 at the Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam.
