“music box / self portrait with ligeti and stravinsky [messiaen is also present]” by Nikodijevic for the First Time in South Korea

The work “music box / self portrait with ligeti and stravinsky [messiaen is also present]” by the Serbian composer Marko Nikodijevic composed in 2000/2001 will be given its South Korean premiere at the Sejong Center in Seoul during the course of the series “Ars Nova Chamber Concerts” on 3 October 2016. It will be performed by the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Antony Hermus.

This ensemble work was already given its world premiere on 1 September 2003 by the soloists of the Gaudeamus Music Week and the Nieuw Ensemble under the direction of Jurjen Hempel in Amsterdam.

Marko Nikodijevic has supplied the following commentary on the creation of “music box / self portrait with ligeti and stravinsky [messiaen is also present]”:
“The composition was designed and realised using digital technology. The computer was used as a tool for developing, investigating and testing possible compositional scenarios. A fractal self-replicating model generates all the notes. Another algorithm generates structural models that process this endless stream of information into known syntactical models, and thus echoes of Ligeti, Stravinsky and Messiaen shine through the score but the presence of these ‘musicks’ is an illusion created by the computer. What we ‘hear’ is actually not ‘present’, just a ‘random’ crossing of data, a ‘butterfly effect’ trick on our perception. The title ‘music box / self portrait with ligeti and stravinsky [messiaen is also present]’ refers to this innate mechanicity of the compositional procedure, the composition being a ‘cookbook’, or a ‘music box’ of some compositional techniques of the XXth century music. Also it was my attempt to somehow ‘get rid’ of this Ligeti/Stravinsky inferiority complex.”
