“Gramophone Classical Music Award” for Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10

Gramophone_Award_Schostak_Sinf10

The live recording of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, Op. 93 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andris Nelsons (Deutsche Grammophon/Universal Music CD 4795059) won a Grammy Award in the category “Best Orchestral Performance” early this year. Now the CD has also won this year’s Gramophone Classical Music Award in the category “Best Orchestral Performance”.

The series entitled “Shostakovich under Stalin’s Shadow” comprises live recordings of those works - performed by the aforementioned interpreters - that reflect Shostakovich’s relationship to the dictator Stalin from the 1930s until the latter’s death. The Tenth Symphony, Shostakovich once said, is a “settlement with Stalinism”.
