Sergei Prokofiev’s “Ivan the Terrible” at the Gergiev Festival 2016

The Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest and the Groot Omroep Koor under the musical direction of the Russian star conductor Valery Gergiev will present the Dutch premiere of Sergei Prokofiev’s oratorio “Ivan the Terrible” (based on the film score of the same name) in the version by Lev Atovmyan during the course of this year’s Gergiev Festival (8-11 September) on 8 September 2016 in Rotterdam. The vocal soloists will be Yulia Matochkina (mezzo soprano) and Roman Burdenko (baritone). Prokofiev’s cantata “Alexander Nevsky” for mezzo soprano, choir and orchestra will also be performed at this concert.

The world premiere of the Atovmyan version of “Ivan the Terrible”, made in 1961, was given at the 2012 Prokofiev Festival in London on 28 January 2012 performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Vladimir Jurowski. It was only in 2007 that the Israeli musicologist and Prokofiev expert Nelly Kravetz received and later edited the score of the Atovmyan version of the oratorio, until then unknown, from Atovmyan’s daughter. In contrast to the frequently performed Stassevich version, the Atovmyan version contains no spoken texts, of which the composer is said to have expressly approved during his lifetime.
