“Motherlode” – New Work by Osmo Tapio Räihälä

The world premiere of the new ensemble work “Motherlode” by Osmo Tapio Räihälä will be presented in Helsinki on 9 September 2016. It will be performed at the G Livelab by the ‘defunensemble’, to which the Finnish composer has dedicated his work for amplified violoncello with live electronics and ensemble, completed in 2016.

The Finnish ensemble, founded in 2009, consists of the following members: Hanna Kinnunen (flute), Mikko Raasakka (clarinet), Lily-Marlene Puusepp (harp), Emil Holmström (piano), Markus Hohti (violoncello), Timo Kurkikangas, Anders Pohjola and Marko Myöhänen (all electronics) and Sami Klemola (ensemble director).

Osmo Tapio Räihälä comments on his work as follows:
“’Motherlode’ is a work for cello and live electronics, and an ensemble of flute/alto flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, harp, piano and sound engineer – this is the line-up of the Finnish ‘defunensemble’, who specialize in electro acoustic music. The solo cello part was written for Markus Hohti, and the pre-set sound effects for the soloist were worked closely together with him. The original idea of the work dates already from 2012, but just as usual, the ripening took several years, and the score was finished in March 2016, helped by a grant from the Arts Promotion Centre of Finland. In ‘Motherlode’ only the cello uses pre-set sounds, that the cellist operates by feet, as the other instruments are only amplified, with the volume and reverb adjusted to the venue of performance. The work starts with a lengthy cello solo, titled Phantasmagoria, and the soloist is the pivot – or a motherlode! – of the work throughout the ca. 17 minutes that it lasts. The second movement is titled Bedlam, the third Nausea, the following Revival and the final Noctilucence. All movements are played without a pause.”
