German Premiere of Giya Kancheli’s “Little Imber”

During the course of this year’s Haldern Pop Festival (11-13 August 2016), the choir “Cantus Domus” and the ensemble “stargaze” will perform the German premiere of Giya Kancheli’s work “Little Imber” for solo voice, male choir (mixed choir), chamber ensemble and tape under the direction of Ralf Sochaczewsky on 12 August 2016.

The title bears witness to the direct relationship of the work to the town of Imber on the Salisbury Plain, declared a restricted area for military operations exactly sixty years ago during the confusion of the Second World War. The one hundred sixty inhabitants were evacuated at that time and had to make room in their town for the stationing of American soldiers.

Kancheli composed this sound portrait for a chamber ensemble, “Little Imber”, in response to a commission from the “Artangel” Organisation. It was given its world premiere on 21 September 2003 in Imber, England, by the Salisbury Cathedral Boys' Choir, the Rustaveli Choir and soloists of the Matrix Ensemble directed by Nika Memanashvili.
