Swiss Premiere: “An den Mond” by Johannes X. Schachtner

The Swiss premiere of Johannes X. Schachtner’s “An den Mond” (To the Moon) – Schubert-Labyrinth for Octet will be presented on 28 June 2016 in Zurich by Helena Berg (violin) and the Ensemble Berg, consisting of members of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Berlin Comic Opera Orchestra, the Munich State Opera and the Zurich Opera. The composer has dedicated the work to Helena Berg.

“An den Mond” was given its world premiere on 8 June 2016 at Friedrichsfelde Palace in Berlin by the Ensemble Berg. Schachtner’s composition in the same instrumentation as the Schubert Octet, which will also be performed at this concert, refers to the Schubert settings of Goethe’s poem “An den Mond”, both of which were written in 1815.

Johannes X. Schachtner comments on “An den Mond” as follows:
“When Helena Berg asked me to contribute a piece referring to the Schubert Octet for a performance of that work, the two Schubert settings of Goethe’s poem ‘An den Mond’ of 1815 came to mind. I had heard them both some time ago performed together at a song recital, and in my mind they were woven and merged into a single Schubert sound painting. My Octet now follows this travelled path that immediately takes us ‘through the labyrinth of the breast’ from one setting to the other.”
