Sofia Gubaidulina Is Capell-Compositrice of the Staatskapelle Dresden Again in 2016/17

Sofia Gubaidulina, who will be celebrating her 85th birthday on 24 October 2016, is again serving as Capell-Compositrice of the Saxon Staatskapelle Dresden for the 2016/17 season. The collaborations with Gubaidulina in Dresden and in concerts on tour were so inspiring and fruitful during Gubaidulina’s first season as Capell-Compositrice in 2014/15, writes the author Matthias Claudi in the current season brochure of the Semperoper Dresden (5/2015/16), that a continuation of this joint endeavour was already at that time being considered by both the Staatskapelle and the composer. Christian Thielemann will conduct Sofia Gubaidulina’s new commissioned work “Der Zorn Gottes” (The Wrath of God) in Dresden, Düsseldorf, Hannover, Hamburg, Madrid, Paris and Vienna. Omar Meir Wellber will conduct the German premiere of the hour-long oratorio for soloists, choir and orchestra “Über Liebe und Hass” (On Love and Hate) at the third symphony concert. In addition, the tenth symphony concert will include a performance of the concerto “Fachwerk” for bayan, percussion and string orchestra by Gubaidulina conducted by Donald Runnicles. Alessandro De Marchi will conduct a special concert on the day commemorating the founding of the Staatskapelle Dresden, including a performance of Gubaidulina’s “Meditation on the Bach Chorale ‘Vor Deinen Thron tret ich hiermit’”. Numerous Gubaidulina works will also be presented at the chamber concerts of the Staatskapelle Dresden, including the Concerto for Bassoon and Low Strings. Ten works by Sofia Gubaidulina, as Claudi reports in the brochure, will be heard during the course of a three-part portrait concert of the Capell-Compositrice on 4 March 2017 in the Schlosskapelle of the Dresden Residential Palace.
