World Premiere: Johannes X. Schachtner’s “Satiericon: Le Fils des étoiles” in Augsburg

The Brass Ensemble of the Leopold Mozart Centre in Augsburg will perform the world premiere of the new work “Satierikon: Le Fils des étoiles” for ten brass players (freely based on Erik Satie) by the Munich composer Johannes X. Schachtner on 3 June 2016 at the Leopold Mozart Centre in Augsburg under the direction of Uwe Kleindienst. The work is a very free adaptation of a piano cycle by Erik Satie, who wrote it as incidental music to the play “Le Fils des étoiles” by Joséphin Péladan.

The composer has provided the following comments on the origins of his new work:
“’Satierikon’ for brass, based on Erik Satie's early piano cycle ‘Le Fils des étoiles’, was written for a concert celebrating Satie’s 150th birthday. The original, dynamic and very rhythmically fixed, Spartan piano writing, with its eccentric headings describing the individual musical sections, is confronted here with the manifold sonic possibilities of a large brass ensemble. The result is not so much a precise transference of Satie’ intentions as an homage to the greatest anarchist in music history - and a pathfinder of Modernism and Postmodernism. Satie’s turns of phrase still provide points of departure for a post-modern tonal play between jazz, Brucknerian brass and archaic yet experimental brass sounds. Thus the brass are not part of a ‘musique d’ameublement’, but are themselves allowed to move ...”
