Eggert’s “Hump and Circumstances” and Schachtner’s “nach’m spiel” in One Concert

The world premiere of Moritz Eggert‘s new chamber orchestral work “Hump and Circumstances” will be presented during the course of the 20th anniversary of the Munich Society for New Music (MGNM e.V.) on 18 June 2016 at the Jubilee Music Festival in Schwere Reiter Munich. The MGNM Festival Ensemble will perform under the direction of Peter Hirsch.

At the same concert, the MGNM Festival Ensemble will also present the new work “nach’m spiel” (sketch for large ensemble with electronic) by the Munich composer Johannes X. Schachtner.

The Munich Society for New Music (MGNM e. V.) was founded in 1996 and regards itself as an organisation for the networking and promotion of a wide variety of initiatives in the area of contemporary music in Munich and environs.

Moritz Eggert has supplied the following commentary on his new work “Hump and Circumstances”:
“In one of the most famous sketches of ‘Monty Python’, John Cleese attempts to purchase a cheese in a cheese shop. He requests ever new types of cheese, and Michael Palin always replies that his shop unfortunately doesn’t carry this particular cheese. Simultaneously with this scene, which grows more and more absurd, a radio plays intolerable Bouzouki music that becomes ever louder.
Musically speaking, my piece has to do with a similar escalation. It was unfortunately impossible for me, however, to adequately represent cheese in contemporary music, since this music is already cheesy enough as it is. It would have to be about a very special ‘context cheese’, therefore, that has recently been in vogue again in New Music, and that is the cheesiness that everything has to be somehow sexual (‘Hump’) and that this alone is already enough to make it interesting. A great deal of classical and contemporary music today moves in this field of tension (‘Circumstances’). And that’s what I don’t find so ‘porno’, Digga.”

Johannes X. Schachtner comments on his work “nach’m spiel” as follows:
“The game: motivic material is established, rhythms are introduced, towers of sound are constructed, motivic material is developed, linked with the main rhythms, presented in stretto, made more dense, slowed down, quoted, played in canon, imitated and concentrated — before everything is brought together in a single, ecstatic piano chord.”
