Elena Firsova: Portuguese Premieres in Porto

Two works by Elena Firsova will receive their Portuguese premieres at the Casa da Música in Porto on 29 April 2016. During the course of the concert “Symphony for the Revolution”, the soprano Christina Daletska and the Remix Ensemble Casa da Música conducted by Pedro Neves will be the performers.

The works of Elena Firsova – “Earthly Life”, Op. 31 and “Music for Twelve”, Op. 34, - were composed in 1984 and 1986 respectively, a very specific creative period for the Russian composer during which the poetry of Ossip Mandelstam occupied her central focus. In her cantata “Earthly Life” for soprano and chamber ensemble, Firsova sets five poems by the well-known Acmeist Ossip Mandelstam. The poet’s language, rich in imagery, gives the composer many points of reference. At the very beginning, for example:

“A careful, hollow sound
of the fruit, having detached itself from the tree,
In the endless melody
Of the deep stillness of the forest ...”

“Music for Twelve”, Op. 34 for chamber ensemble is also arranged – as the composer states – “in poetical sections like lines of a poem” although this is a purely instrumental work. The instruments join together here to form a concertante ensemble. The musical material is based on a five-tone theme that permeates the entire work in many guises (augmentation, diminution, mirror form, retrograde, sequencing and tonal expansion).
