American Premiere: Giya Kancheli’s “Dixi” in Boston

Andris Nelsons conducts the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the American premiere of Giya Kancheli’s “Dixi” for choir and orchestra on 24 March 2016 in Boston. The Tanglewood Festival Chorus will support the Boston Symphony Orchestra. During the course of this concert evening Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 will also be performed at the Boston Symphony Hall.

Giya Kancheli comments on “Dixi” as follows:
“The reason why I selected these Latin phrases was to remind our contemporaries how relevant, still today, are the age-old problems that have always existed. We are only entitled to remind ourselves that the gap between good and evil unfortunately continues to grow, despite the greatest advances in civilisation. Not even Beethoven succeeded in improving this world by writing his great hymn of joy and unity. And we ordinary mortals only have the right to offer advice and to warn.”

Further performances of this concert program will follow on 25 March (1:30 PM) and on 26 March (8 PM) at the Boston Symphony Hall.
