Two New Works by Osmo Tapio Räihälä

The Finnish avant-gardist Osmo Tapio Räihälä composed in 2015 his new work for violin and reciter “(G)astronomia” for the “Tampere Biennale” music festival (13-17.04.2016). During the course of the festival the world premiere will be given on 16 April 2016 performed by the violinist Maria Puusaari and Suvi Valli (reciter) at the Music Hall of the Old Library House Cultural Centre in Tampere.

Osmo Tapio Räihälä comments on his work “(G)astronomia” as followed:
“I came across the Finnish poet Suvi Valli (b. 1977) and her texts in 2014, while I was staying at the Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf in Brandenburg, Germany. I wasn't looking for a text to compose vocal music, but Suvi's poetry took me by surprise: it is vocal music. What made me instantly to think of setting her text into music, was the way she uses colours and rhythms. She weaves her stories and stream of consciousness into a fascinating polyphony, and behind every corner there is a surprise. The captivating, yet challenging layout of the text is not completely without importance either. Luckily, her poems are being translated into several languages right now. Then why on earth did I choose using a reciter instead of a singer in my first work that uses her poem? Because of the strong musicality of her poem, I wanted to let it set the tone for itself. And partly for the same reason, I chose the violin instead of the piano as the accompaniment, as I felt that the dialogue between a reciter and the violin would be a bit subtler.”

Four days later, on 20 April 2016, the world premiere of a mysterious new orchestral work by Osmo Tapio Räihälä under the title “Myriad” will be given. Räihälä does not wish to tell us anything more than that this music will be very powerful and rich in colours. “Myriad” is the designation for a type of writing designed by Robert Slimbach and Carol Twombly in 1992; it belongs to the so-called “humanistic grotesque” types of writing. The world premiere of “Myriad” for orchestra and choir will be performed by the Choir of the music centre Musiikkitalo and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Hannu Lintu at the music centre Musiikkitalo in Helsinki. “Myriad” is a commissioned work by Yleisradio and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

A further performance of “Myriad” with the same interpreters will be given one day later (7 PM), again at the Musiikkitalo.
