New Opera “Die Schneekönigin” by Marius Felix Lange at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein

Marius Felix Lange’s children’s and family operas have enjoyed phenomenal success. After composing the opera “Das Opernschiff oder: Am Südpol, denkt man, ist es heiß” to a text by Elke Heidenreich in 2004, there followed the operas “Snow White” (2011), “The Canterville Ghost” (2013), the family opera “The Girl Who Did Not Want to Sleep” (2014) and the musical fairytale “Millistrade” (2015). The new opera “Die Schneekönigin” (The Snow Queen) will now receive its world premiere on 23 April 2016 at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Theater Duisburg).

The content: The young Gerda has found a friend in Kai who is as dear to her as if he were her own brother. She plays and dreams with him until a horrible misfortune separates the two from each other. With fierce determination and unapproachable toughness, the Snow Queen abducts little Kai from real life. She robs him of the warm heart that she herself lacks, forcing him to live in her kingdom and fulfil insoluble tasks there. If it hadn’t been for Gerda, Kai would never have been allowed to return. This girl, however, strong and fearless, sets out on a journey into the icy kingdom of the Snow Queen. No other story by Hans Christian Andersen is more gripping and gruesome than this one. The famous “Snow Queen” is also one of the longest tales of the Danish author, almost approaching the scale of a novel.

Marius Felix Lange, who also wrote the libretto, comments on his opera as follows:
“Whilst writing the libretto, I found it important to stay as close to the original as possible, not least in order to transfer into music my childhood memories of this tale, which had always been one of my favourites. This applied not only to the plot - as a whole and in its details - but also to the specific atmosphere of the story, its humour, its touching aspects and even the original dialogues. What was decisive, however, as always, was that music should be created.”

“The Snow Queen” is a cooperative venture between the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Theater Dortmund and the Theater Bonn as part of the series “Junge Opern Rhein-Ruhr”.
