Grigori Frid: Complete Music for Viola and Piano [CD]

The worldwide success of the mono-opera “The Diary of Anne Frank” is perhaps one of the reasons why the rich instrumental oeuvre of Grigori Frid, a Shostakovich contemporary who died in Moscow in 2012, has only relatively recently begun to attract interest. It could be due to the concentration on this central work, the mono-opera, that other works by this composer have only been performed and recorded much later. The violist Elena Artamonova and the pianist Christopher Guild have now released a recording of Frid’s complete works for viola and piano – a recording full of discoveries to made. The Viola Sonata No. 2, Op. 78 is a large-scale work lasting almost half an hour, and is very close to Shostakovich’s sound idiom. Pseudo-folkloristic elements repeatedly shine through in the Andantino movement “Music in a Palace”, for example. The richness of contrasts in this music is quite extraordinary. Alongside the First Viola Sonata and the Six Pieces for Viola and Piano, Op. 68, the recording also contains Alexander Wustin’s work “In memoriam Grigori Frid” for viola and piano.
