10 March 2016 - Prof. Dr. Hans W. Sikorski Is 90

Prof. Dr. Hans W. Sikorski, former Managing Director of Sikorski Music Publishers, honorary member and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of GEMA (German Association for the Protection of Rights Associated with Musical Performances), will be celebrating his 90th birthday on 10 March 2016.

Cultural relations with Eastern countries and the development of the catalogue of New Music from Germany, in particular, have been at the centre of his activities. The most important repertoire of great twentieth-century Russian composers, such as Aram Khachaturian, Sergei Prokofiev, Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, Dmitri Shostakovich and Galina Ustvolskaya, was made accessible to the Western musical world largely thanks to his pioneering work.

Sikorski has occupied diverse honorary offices at the international level, including  President of the BIEM in Paris and board member of the Rachmaninoff Society in Lucerne. CISAC, the international parent company of all copyright collecting societies, awarded him their gold medal in 1998 for many years of service on behalf of authors' rights. Sikorski is also Honorary Professor of the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Honorary President of the Hamburg Conservatory and Honorary Chairman of the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Society in Hamburg. He has received many awards for his numerous voluntary commitments, including the Grand Federal Service Cross, the Biermann-Rathjen Medal and the “Portugaleser”.

Prof. Sikorski is married and has five children, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Sikorski Music Publishers are an internationally orientated publishers' group with headquarters in Hamburg. Alongside the great representatives of Russian modernism, such as Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergei Prokofiev, and the German avant-garde, numerous contemporary composers from all over the world are under contract with works of all categories and genres. The publishing company has also maintained its traditional commitment to the area of entertainment music with great composers and interpreters including Freddy Quinn and the Les Humphries Singers as well as the children's songwriter Rolf Zuckowski. Today, the management of the publishing group is in the hands of Dagmar Sikorski and Dr. Axel Sikorski.
