“Warzone” by Giya Kancheli in Canada

The Canadian premiere of Giya Kancheli’s orchestral work “Warzone” will be given on 21 February 2016 in Sherbrooke, a city in the Province of Québec. The Orchestre Symphonique des Jeunes de Sherbrooke will perform the work, composed in 2002, under the direction of Hubert Tanguay-Labrosse in the Théâtre Centennial alongside works of Brahms, Sibelius and Mendelssohn.

“Warzone” was commissioned by the Rotterdam Gergiev Festival, and Kancheli dedicated it to Valery Gergiev on the occasion of his 50th birthday. The work received its world premiere on 21 September 2002, performed by the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev in Rotterdam.

Kancheli wrote the following to Gergiev at that time:
“I named my composition dedicated to you ‘uarson’, an Ossetian word that virtually means ‘love’. But when I began writing this word in Latin letters, it suddenly became apparent that the sound more or less corresponded to the English word ‘warzone’. And in this transcription, the word does indeed reflect the events in the Caucasus. As we know only too well, just a single step is enough to create a ‘warzone’ out of love. The path leading back from a ‘warzone’ to love, however, is long and difficult.”
