20th Anniversary of the Death of Mieczyslaw Weinberg

The international success of the works of Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996) is quite unstoppable. His operas are being produced on many major stages and existing productions are being taken on. Meanwhile, this composer‘s highly interesting instrumental music is coming into ever greater focus. More and more exclusive new recordings of his compositions are appearing on the record market as well.

The musical world will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of Mieczysław Weinberg on 26 February 2016.

Here are current, up-to-date reports on concerts and projects being dedicated to this great composer:

The Sinfonia Varsovia under the direction of And res Mustonen performed Mieczysław Weinberg‘s Fantasia for violoncello and orchestra at Moniuszko Auditorium in Warsaw on 27 October 2014. The violinist Linus Roth performed the German premiere of Mieczysław Weinberg‘s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra on 2/3 November 2014 in Karlsruhe with the Badische Staatskapelle under Mei-Ann Chen.

Gidon Kremer and Andrey Boreyko performed Mieczysław Weinberg‘s Violin Concerto in the USA for the first time on 9/10 January 2015 in Naples with the Naples Philharmonic. Kremer intends to perform the work frequently in many countries. The premiere of a new production of the Weinberg opera “The Idiot” in Russian (original version) took place on 24 January 2015 at the Oldenburg State Theatre. The director will be Andrea Schwalbach. Starting on 23 July 2015, the Mannheim National Theatre presenting Mieczysław Weinberg‘s opera “The Idiot” in the Russian original version premiered there on 9 May 2013. In late 2015 PAN CLASSICS, in a co-production with Deutschlandradio Kultur and the Südwestrundfunk, released the recording of the highly acclaimed staging of Weinberg‘s opera ”The Idiot“ at the Mannheim National Theatre, given its world premiere there on 9 May 2013 with great success.

On 11 March 2016 the Mannheim National Theatre scheduled its successful production of the Weinberg opera “The Idiot” again in the season program. Further performances take place on:

In May 2016 the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, under the direction of Vladimir Jurowski, goes on European tour with Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Symphony No. 10:
