Mieczyslaw Weinberg: CD “The Idiot”

This is one of the very greatest discoveries in the opera history of the 20th century. The operas “Lady Magnesia”, “Congratulations”, “The Portrait” and “The Idiot” by Mieczyslaw Weinberg, who died in 1996, have been just recently rediscovered. Their triumphal procession over the world’s operatic stages is meanwhile unstoppable. A complete live recording of the opera „The Idiot“ from the worldpremiere at the Mannheim National Theatre made in 2013 is now available on CD. Thomas Sanderling is the musical director, with Juhan Tralla, Steven Scheschareg, Ludmilla Slepneva und Bryan Boyce singing the principal roles in Russian.

The opera is based on the novel of the same title by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It tells the passionate story of Prince Myshkin, psychologically highly unstable and immortally in love with the beautiful Nastassia; he is at themercy, utterly defencelessly, of his beloved’s stalling promises.
