Ultraschall Berlin: Peter Ruzicka’s “FLUCHT” Given World Premiere

Ruzicka_FLUCHT_UA

On 24 January 2016, Franck Ollu will direct the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin in the world premiere of Peter Ruzicka’s new orchestral work “FLUCHT” at the Haus des Rundfunks in Berlin. The concert will take place during the course of the festival “Ultraschall Berlin” (20.–24.01.2016). Unfortunately Simone Young has cancelled her conducting.

Peter Ruzicka has supplied the following commentary on his work “FLUCHT”, completed in 2014:
“My orchestral work ‘FLUCHT’ is initially related to a music-theatrical work in progress about Walter Benjamin. As was the case prior to the composition of my two earlier operas CELAN and HÖLDERLIN, I have also attempted here to describe, in the form of a purely orchestral work, the specific "tone" that will be decisive for the later operatic score. During the course of this, the musical material points out several new paths that could be significant for my compositional work.
The piece does not depict any internal programme and – like the opera – is not actually a work ‘about’ or ‘with’ Benjamin, but rather ‘due to Benjamin’, whose restless journey is itself intended to become realised in sound here. In this respect, one could probably sense something of the hermetic-mystic depth of many of his texts, as well as something of the discontinuity of his thought. And one will also find out about Walter Benjamin himself, plagued by depression and isolation. The musical gestural language, therefore appears as an ‘inward journey’…”
