Two Shostakovich Albums Nominated for the Grammy Award in 2016

The nominations for the renowned “Grammy” Award have just been announced at the end of 2015. The stirring recording, released by Deutsche Grammophon, of the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Andris Nelsons performing Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, Op. 93 as well as the Passacaglia from Shostakovich's opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” have been nominated in the category of “Orchestral Performance”. The album is entitled “Under Stalin’s Shadow”, referring to Shostakovich's tense relationship to the Soviet dictator; performances of the opera  “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” had been banned by Stalin during the 1930s. The Tenth Symphony, too, stands in a direct relationship to Stalin, for it was written during the year of his death.

The second album nominated for the Grammy, also dedicated to this composer, is in the area of chamber music and released by the CDA label. It contains  Shostakovich's Piano Quintet and String Quartet No. 2, played by the Takács Quartet and the pianist Marc-André Hamelin.
