Georgy Sviridov - 100th Birthday

After attending the music school in Kursk, Georgy Sviridov, whose 100th birthday we shall be commemorating on 16 December 2015, moved to Leningrad in order to study piano and composition until 1936, becoming a pupil of Shostakovich who was just a few years his senior but already established and noticed by those in political power because of the scandal created by his opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District”.

Alongside the large number of vocal works by Sviridov, we wish to draw attention here to the composer’s striking Piano Trio, a Piano Sonata and the Variations on a Theme by Glinka for piano. In addition, the cantata for soloists, choir and percussion instruments entitled “Night Clouds” and especially the popular orchestral work “Snowstorm” are particularly outstanding.
