Moritz Eggert turns 50

Moritz Eggert will be celebrating his 50th birthday on 25 November 2015. Eggert is surely one of the most versatile personalities in the New Music scene. Whoever has had the good fortune to experience him as the interpreter of his famous piano pieces from the series “Hämmerklavier” has an idea of his temperament. Eggert is a pianist, composer, conductor, festival organiser, author, teacher, performer and much more. He is a member of the jury at many composition competitions and meanwhile an honorary member of the “A•DEvantgardeFestivals” which he founded. Since 2010 he has been Professor of Composition at the Munich Music Academy, and has held a lectureship at the Academy of Music in Mainz since 2014. In 2015 he was invited to the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York, as “Howard Hanson Guest Visiting Composer”.

At present, the scenic premiere of Moritz Eggert’s opera “FREAX” is being prepared at the Regensburg Theatre. The premiere is to take place during the 2016/17 season. The concertante premiere was given on 2 September 2007 at the Bonn Theatre. The work is based on a libretto by Hannah Dübgen. It tells a tragic love story in the brutal world of show business: the dwarf Franz wants the tall, beautiful Isabella and Isabella wants Hilbert, the moderator. Hilbert wants a major success. The drama takes its course in a vicious circle of longing, deception and lust for power.

Another upcoming project is the Swiss premiere of Moritz Eggert’s “Das Orchester geht zum Konzert” on 7 February 2016 in Zurich with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra under the direction of Florian Ludwig. The composer himself will appear as speaker. This work for speaker, pictures and orchestra, the text of which was written by none other than the children’s book author Paul Maar (“Das Sams” and other works), was commissioned by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in 2011.

“Les Temps Modernes” for six percussionists and soprano by Moritz Eggert will receive its world premiere on 16 March 2016 at the biennale “Musiques en scène”. The Linz Music Theatre has announced the premiere of the opera “TERRA NOVA or The White Life” in a production by Carlus Padrissa and under the musical direction of Dennis Russell Davies for 26 May 2016. The libretto was written by Franzobel and Rainer Mennicken.
