New CDs with music by Krzysztof Meyer

The pianist Marek Szlezer has now issued the second CD of his complete recording of the piano works of his compatriot Krzysztof Meyer. It contains Piano Sonatas Nos. 4 to 6, which were composed within the truly lengthy period from 1968 to 2006. If the composer’s early piano sonatas were at times influenced by Béla Bartók, the later works of this genre presented here are structured completely differently, often with very dense, concise movements. Calm sound areas are mixed with eruptive, highly virtuoso passages, often assembled from apparently fragmentary splinters of material.

There is an enormous richness in contrasts, especially in Sonata No. 4, Op. 22, cast in six movements. Sonata No. 5, Op. 32 bears the subtitle “Sonate des sons rayonnants”; its finale “Ossessivo” is particularly surprising with disparate elements which only very gradually unfold. The Sixth Piano Sonata, “Sonata breve”, on the other hand, is in a single movement and develops out of a broad cantilena in which Meyer lives out his individual, newly discovered interest in melodic structures repeatedly emphasised in the works of the last two decades. Finally, the Sei Intermezzi, Op. 121 are especially vital, performed by Szlezer with particularly strong expression on this CD recording.
