Portrait Concert for Xiaoyong Chen in Hamburg

On 17 October 2015 the University of Hamburg and Fudan University in Shanghai, in cooperation with the Hamburg Academy of Music and Theatre during the fourth Shanghai-Hamburg Forum, will be presenting the concert “Zwischenwelten – Auf der Suche nach dem idealen Klang” (Worlds In-Between: Searching for the Ideal Sound) for the Chinese composer Xiaoyong Chen, who lives in Hamburg.

At the centre of focus will be works by Chen, played by the E-MEX Ensemble and Dr. Sun Zhuo (zheng).

The organisation of the concert programme is comparable to a journey through the epochs. It begins with music played on the historic Chinese instrument zheng (Chinese zither) which, during the further course of events, forms a bridge between the cultures and epochs up to the present day. The composer’s origins and his travels between Germany and China have constantly accompanied Xiaoyong Chen over the past 30 years, and these experiences and impressions have inspired his work. “Is my music connected with the Chinese tradition and where does it grow beyond that? What role has European musical culture played in this, in order to find a new kind of form for me?”
