Arutiunian, Alexander

Alexander Arutiunian is from Yerevan, Armenia. He completed his studies with honours in composition and piano at the conservatory in his home town.

From 1946 until 1948 he studied composition under Litinsky and orchestration under Peyko in Moscow. Starting in 1954 he was Artistic Director of the Armenian Philharmonic in Yerevan.

He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1949) and the State Prize of the Armenian SSR (1970).

Armenian folklore has been a lasting influence on his style.
