St. John Passion for soprano, tenor, baritone, bass, two mixed choirs, organ and orchestra

Sofia Gubaidulinas großes Oratorium nach Texten des Evangelisten Johannes besteht aus den Teilen „Johannes-Passion“ und „Johannes-Ostern“. Die 90-minütige „Johannes-Passion“ schrieb die Komponistin im Auftrag der Bachakademie Stuttgart. Es ist die erste russische Passionsvertonung überhaupt. Einen Kontrast zu den dunklen Ereignissen der Passion bildet das ein Jahr später im Auftrag des Norddeutschen Rundfunks komponierte, knapp einstündige Osteroratorium nach Johannes, das den Auferstehungs- und Erlösungsgedanken thematisiert und in helleren, lyrischeren Tönen gehalten ist. Damit vollendet sich Gubaidulinas Johannes-Zyklus, den sie als ihr ‚opus summum’ bezeichnet. Die Uraufführung des kompletten Zyklus fand am 16. März 2002 in der Hamburger St.-Michaelis-Kirche unter der Leitung von Valery Gergiev statt.

Sofia Gubaidulina's great oratorio to texts of St. John the Evangelist consists of the parts "St. John Passion" and "St. John Easter." The composer wrote the 90-minute "St. John Passion" in response to a commission from the Stuttgart Bach Academy. It is the first Russian Passion setting ever composed. The one-hour Easter Oratorio based on St. John, composed one year later to a commission from North German Radio, forms a contrast to the dark events of the Passion. Its subject is the notion of resurrection and redemption and it is set in a brighter, more lyrical tone. This completes Gubaidulina's St. John cycle, which she designates as her 'opus summum.' The world premiere of the complete cycle took place on 16 March 2002 at the St. Michaelis Kirche in Hamburg under the direction of Valery Gergiev.
