Content:

A theatrical troop rehearses Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” whilst civil war rages outside the theatre. Frustrated over the powerlessness of the theatre, the author turns directly to the audience with an extensive monologue; at the same time, figures from the unreal world of the theatre penetrate into a dubious reality. Reality and appearance increasingly blend together and arguments develop between the author and the angry theatre spectators over how true and raw, or how beautiful and untruthful theatre should be. The author is called backstage so that the rehearsal can finally begin. The actress playing Titiania also calls for the director, author and lover. Shots, machine gun fire and revolutionary songs can be heard. The author frenetically greets the arrival of the revolutionaries in the foyer of the theatre, but the actress insightfully senses the impending destruction of the stage and the end of the theatre. A lumberjack from the “Midsummer Night’s Dream” scenery is lost on stage whilst the canons fire. In view of the mounting chaos, a spectator desperately cries out for her children. Irritated by the woman’s screaming in panic, the actress pathetically demonstrates to her how a perfect mourning scene should be staged. The gunfire approaches ever closer.
