Sofia Gubaiudlina: Premiere Recording of Bayan Concerto “Fachwerk”

The bayan concerto "Fachwerk" by the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina became, already shortly after its composition in 2009/2011, one of the world's most frequently performed orchestral works of new music. The premiere recording of this fascinating work by the bayanist Geirs Draugsvoll and the percussionist Anders Loguin with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra Strings directed by Oyvind Gimse is now available.

For Gubaidulina, the term FACHWERK, the sound of which greatly fascinates her, contains two components. One is the craftsmanship that is necessary to create a performable work of music in terms of structure, form, architecture and temporal sequence. The other is an aesthetic component. The half-timbered method of construction served not only aspects of statics in buildings of the late middle ages and the early modern era, but also lent these buildings a particularly attractive, picturesque appearance. The instrument bayan, because of its method of construction and specific sonic possibilities, also perfectly manifests the "half-timbered" principle in the eyes of the composer. Thus beauty and construction are united to form an artistic whole in Sofia Gubaidulina's latest instrumental concerto – as is also the case in her previous works.
