Content:

Adam is disappointed by his elder son Cain. Completely in contrast to the younger Abel, he prefers to roam about aimlessly in the city instead of helping out in the field. When Cain shows up at home again, at the time when he should in fact be working with Abel in the field, Adam criticises him severely and sends him out to his brother. Abel proudly shows the arriving Cain the calf that he has just slain without his brother’s help for the first time. The girl who has fallen in love with Abel joins them and Cain believes that he has visited her in the city shortly beforehand. The jealous Abel becomes so furious that he finally threatens Cain with the hatchet. The brothers have it out. Abel, however, is unable to understand Cain’s inner conflicts, his vacillation between hate and love for his father and his brother. Cain becomes more and more melancholy and finally beats Abel to death. He then flees to the city, looking for Abel’s lover. When he returns home late, Eve, worried about her sons, receives him. When she asks about Abel’s whereabouts, Cain replies with an uncertain “Don’t know …”
