Berlin: World Premiere of Lera Auerbach's "Psalm 100"

The Women's Choir of St. Matthäus-Kirche (St. Matthew's Church) in Berlin will perform the world premiere of Lera Auerbach's "Psalm 100" for unison choir under the direction of Lothar Knappe on 17 May 2009. The concert will take place at St. Matthäus during the course of the event "hORA - (Liturgy - Word - Music)."

The composer has the following to say about her work:

“The psalm is dedicated to Melanie Silverman. Melanie was the most remarkable and courageous child, who gave a lot of happiness to everyone around. She lived in Los Angeles and died several years ago from cancer at the age of nine. I wrote this psalm for her, while staying with her grandparents, Herbert and Beverly Gelfand. Herbert Gelfand for many years used to be the chairman of the UJA Federation in LA until he retired from that position a few years ago. Both Herbert and Beverly are very active in the Los Angeles cultural scene. Herb is president of the board of the Geffen Theater and AYS orchestra among other organizations. I met them at the Aspen Music Festival back in 1993, and since then they became my guardian angels. I played Psalm 100 for Melanie just a few weeks before she died. After her death, there was a foundation established in her name to raise funds for cancer research for the LA Children's Hospital.”
