Sofia Gubaidulina’s “On Love and Hatred” for the First Time in Norway

Sofia Gubaidulina’s “On Love and Hatred” was commissioned by the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Dresden Frauenkirche Foundation, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam. In it, Sofia Gubaidulina sets psalm and prayer texts, mostly in German and Russian but also in Italian, French and English. In its musical and textual content, the work is the spiritual reaction of the composer to the increasing unrest of today’s world.

The Norwegian premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s “On Love and Hatred” will be presented on 2 August 2017 in Trondheim during the course of the St. Olav Festival ‘Olavsfestdagene’ (28.07.-05.08.2017), performed by the soloists Aile Asszonyi (soprano), Mati Turi (tenor), Rauno Elp (baritone) and Pavlo Balakin (bass) together with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, the Purcell Choir Budapest, the Trondheim Vocal Ensemble and the Nidaros Cathedral Choir under the musical direction of Andres Mustonen.

Sofia Gubaidulina’s “Fachwerk” (completed in 2009) for bayan, percussion and string orchestra will also be performed at this concert, featuring the bayan soloist Geir Draugsvoll.
