PETER RUZICKA: Two World Premieres in Bremen und Hamburg

The soprano Sarah Maria Sun (who will replace Anna Prohaska) will be the soloist at the world premiere of Peter Ruzicka’s “MNEMOSYNE” for soprano, string orchestra and percussion at the concert entitled ‘Entdeckerfreuden’ (Joys of Discovery) on 5 May 2017 in Bremen. The composer himself will conduct the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen at the concert hall ‘Die Glocke’. Ruzicka had already turned to the late text “Mnemosyne” of Hölderlin in his 6th String Quartet “ERINNERUNG UND VERGESSEN”. “The new piece reaches out still further, both in its textual basis and its inclusion of the string orchestra and percussion,” according to the composer.

A follow-up performance of this concert will take place on 6 May 2017 at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

On 7 May 2017 the Minguet Quartet, who have already performed and recorded the complete string quartets of Peter Ruzicka, will present the world premiere of the latest work in this genre, the String Quartet No. 7 entitled “... possible-à-chaque-instant” at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Peter Ruzicka explains that the title refers to an idea of Paul Valéry concerning the artistic creative process - an idea that has occupied the composer for a long time. “Perhaps it would be interesting to create a work that would show, on each of its nodal points, how things of different types could present themselves to the spirit there before choosing a single sequence from them that would then be presented in the text. That would mean: instead of the illusion of a single designation imitating reality, placing the one which ‘is possible at each moment’.” In the new string quartet, he avoids unequivocal continuities and repeatedly speaks in the possibility form about “fragments from the future”, the composer explains. “The piece aims towards a compositional self-experience in which the totality of the composition is not the goal, but rather reflects its processual course.”

After the concert with the Minguet Quartet in the Elbphilharmonie, listeners can hear the composer in interview in the foyer (5:30 PM).
