Osmo Tapio Räihälä: New Piano Trio “Temptations” Given World Premiere
Maria Puusaari (violin), Eeva Rysä (violoncello) and Sonja Fräki (piano) will perform the world premiere of a new piano trio by the Finnish composer Osmo Tapio Räihälä on 23 April 2017 at the Musiikkitalo (Music House) in Helsinki. It is entitled “Temptations” and has a performance duration of about 12 minutes. Räihälä wrote it in response to a commission from the world premiere soloists, who will present it during the course of the Finnish concert series “The First Temptations” on the occasion of the one hundredth jubilee of Finnish independence. Piano trios from 1917 till 2017 will be performed at this series.
After the world premiere, Räihälä's work will be performed in other Finnish cities throughout the year 2017.
The composer has supplied the following words about his work:
“I was asked to write a piano trio for a concert series celebrating the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence. The programme would comprise Finnish piano trios from 1917 to this year, where my work would close the 100 years circle. In the repertoire, there’s a piano trio by Joonas Kokkonen (1921-1996), whose best known work is the opera ‘The Last Temptations’ (1975), so the concert was titled ‘The First Temptations’.
This gave me an idea of a work in three continuously played movements, where the inspiration to music comes from various temptations. The first is titled ‘Honey Trap’, to be played ‘molto insettuoso’ – insect-like. A honey trap can be a carnivorous plant, but also a sexual temptation, aiming to trap a politician, a businessman and suchlike. The second, restless movement is titled ‘Corryvreckan’. The name comes from the maelstrom in the inner Hebrides – for centuries countless seamen have defied its perils, and many a ship has ended up in the abyss. The last movement is titled ‘Birds of Paradise’, to be played ‘molto uccelloso’, bird-like. Seemingly there’s neither aim nor structure, just chirping and colourful scampering through branches and tree-tops. But what is the aim of the birds, isn't it to charm a partner, to build up temptations?”
