World Premiere: “NASIMI PASSION” by Franghiz Ali-Zadeh in Amsterdam

On 7 April 2017 the baritone Evez Abdulla, the Groot Omroepkoor and the Concertgebouw Orkest Amsterdam under the direction of Martyn Brabbins will present the world premiere of the “Nasimi Passion” for baritone, choir and orchestra by Franghiz Ali-Zadeh during the course of the concert evening “The New Passion” in Amsterdam. The new vocal symphonic work “Nasimi Passion” was commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam.

The Azerbaijan (Baku) composer has informed us about the inspiration and background of this work, as well as its connection to present-day history in the following words:
“Exactly six centuries ago, in 1417, the Azerbaijani poet, thinker and Sufist Nasimi was executed and buried in the city of Aleppo. We know from history that the best people of their time found their deaths at the place of execution; there are enough examples. And today they don’t even have to be designated: Aleppo is bombed out, everybody is dying there – the best thinkers as well as simple people including children and old people! Whilst I was working on the Passion, the situation in Aleppo changed every day, becoming worse and worse. This state of affairs has made a definite mark on my work. On the other hand, I am extremely fortunate that my life is connected to Berlin and that I can hear Bach‘s Passions each year in various churches. I found the performance of the St. John Passion in Berlin Cathedral under the direction of Tobias Brommann in December 2015 to be especially impressive and unforgettable. This interpretation moved my soul very profoundly! All these facts, thoughts and feelings have influenced the music of my Passion.”

A following concert will be given two days later on 9 April 2017 (2:15 PM) at the Concertgebouw.
